Build a Stronger Business by Becoming a Stronger Business Manager
Running a successful SME requires more than working hard and responding to whatever needs attention next.
As a business develops, owners need practical ways to understand performance, manage competing priorities, make better financial and commercial decisions, maintain focus on customers and growth, and ensure that actions actually get followed through.
The Business Performance & Growth Programme is a structured six-month, one-to-one programme designed to strengthen these practical management capabilities — while applying them directly to your own business.
Rather than simply providing advice, we work together each month on an important area of business management, apply practical tools and approaches, and establish management disciplines you can continue using independently.
The objective is a better-managed business — with greater visibility, focus, accountability and capacity for sustainable growth.
Who Is This Programme For
This programme is designed for SME business owners and managers who have an established business but want to strengthen the way it is managed.
It may be particularly valuable if you:
- spend too much time reacting to immediate issues rather than managing proactively
- struggle to maintain focus across competing priorities
- want a clearer picture of how the business is actually performing
- need greater confidence using financial information to make decisions
- want to improve customer, sales and growth performance
- need stronger accountability and follow-through
- want a practical management rhythm that keeps the business moving forward
- are preparing the business for its next stage of growth or change
You do not need to have all the answers. The programme is designed to help you develop the management capability and disciplines to make better decisions yourself.
How the Programme Works
The programme runs over six months, with one facilitated one-to-one session each month.
Each month focuses on an important area of business management, while also responding to what is actually happening within your business at the time.
The programme includes:
- a monthly facilitated one-to-one working session
- preparation and review before each session
- a written report following each session, including agreed priorities and actions
- practical frameworks and tools where appropriate
- ongoing support between sessions
- a structured Weekly Business Review methodology that you use independently
This combination provides enough structure to build new management habits while allowing time between sessions to put them into practice.
This is not about creating more meetings or paperwork. It is about establishing a practical management rhythm that helps you stay on top of the business.
Month 1 — Managing Business Performance
We begin by establishing a clearer picture of how the business is performing and what requires management attention.
You will develop a practical Weekly Business Review methodology that enables you to regularly step back from day-to-day activity and ask:
What is happening? What needs attention? What matters most now?
We identify the performance measures that are genuinely useful to your business and establish a simple, repeatable management rhythm.
A Weekly Business Review is then completed independently by you between our monthly sessions. (This is covered in more depth below)
Month 2 — Managing Priorities & Focus
Business owners are constantly faced with competing demands.
This module helps you distinguish between what is urgent and what is genuinely important, establish clearer priorities and translate those priorities into manageable actions.
We look at where your time and attention are going, what may be distracting the business from its objectives, and how to maintain greater focus on what matters most.
The objective is to manage yourself — and the business — with greater purpose and discipline.
Month 3 — Financial Management for Business Owners
You do not need to become an accountant, but you do need to understand the financial information that helps you manage your business.
We focus on the financial measures most relevant to your situation and how they can be used to support better decisions.
Depending on your business, this may include revenue, margins, costs, cash flow, profitability, pricing, budgets and forecasts.
The emphasis is on using financial information as a practical management tool — not simply reviewing accounts after the event.
Month 4 — Managing Customers, Sales & Growth
Sustainable businesses need customers, revenue and a clear understanding of where future growth will come from.
We review how the business attracts, wins, retains and develops customers and identify opportunities to strengthen sales and commercial performance.
Depending on your situation, this may include customer mix, market focus, sales pipeline, conversion, pricing, customer retention, new opportunities and potential growth channels.
The objective is to manage growth deliberately rather than simply hoping sales will happen.
Month 5 — Leading Change, Resources & Accountability
As priorities change and businesses develop, owners need to ensure that the right resources, responsibilities and accountability are in place.
We look at what is required to deliver your priorities — including people, capability, external resources, systems and management responsibilities.
Where other people are involved, we also consider how expectations are communicated, responsibilities clarified and progress followed through.
The focus is on turning decisions into action and ensuring the business has the capability to deliver.
Month 6 — Management Review & Continuous Improvement
The final month brings the programme together.
We review progress across the six months, identify what has improved, what still requires attention and which management practices should continue.
We also look forward — establishing the priorities for the next stage of the business and how you will continue reviewing performance independently.
The objective is not dependence on an advisor. It is stronger management capability that continues after the programme finishes.
The Weekly Review
One of the most important elements of the programme is establishing a regular Weekly Business Review.
This is not another meeting with me.
It is a short, structured review that you complete independently each week to maintain visibility and focus between our monthly sessions.
The review helps you regularly consider areas such as business performance, financial position, customers and sales, priorities, emerging issues, actions and decisions required.
At our monthly session, your experience using the Weekly Business Review also helps inform where we need to focus.
Over time, the objective is for this to become part of your normal management rhythm.
A relatively small amount of disciplined management time each week can prevent the business from slipping back into purely reactive management.

What You Can Expect to Gain
By the end of the six-month programme, you should have developed stronger practical capability to manage your business.
Typical outcomes include:
- greater visibility of business performance
- clearer priorities and improved management focus
- stronger understanding and use of financial information
- improved management of customers, sales and growth
- greater accountability and follow-through
- better decisions around resources and capability
- a practical Weekly Business Review discipline
- stronger confidence as a business owner or manager
- a clearer approach to continuous improvement
Most importantly, you will have practical management methods that can continue to be used after the programme has finished.
Practical, Experienced Business Support
Work with someone who has actually run businesses
I’m Neil Sayer, founder of Get Ahead Advisory.
I bring more than 40 years of practical business experience, including senior leadership and CEO roles in New Zealand and international businesses.
My experience includes manufacturing, engineering, infrastructure, international markets, sales and commercial development, business growth, operational management and leading teams through significant change.
I have experienced many of the issues SME owners face — competing priorities, cash flow pressure, difficult decisions, growth challenges, people issues, changing markets and the constant tension between working in the business and finding enough time to work on it.
My role is not to tell you how to run your business.
It is to bring an experienced outside perspective, challenge where appropriate, introduce practical management approaches and help you develop the capability to make stronger decisions yourself.
Regional Business Partner Network Support
The Business Performance & Growth Programme is registered with the Regional Business Partner Network (RBN).
The full investment for the six-month programme is NZ$3,000 + GST.
Eligible businesses may qualify for RBN co-funding support.
As an indication, with approved 50% co-funding, your contribution would be approximately NZ$1,500 + GST for the full six-month programme.
Funding is subject to RBN eligibility, Growth Advisor assessment, approval and available funding.
If you are interested in the programme, you do not need to work through the funding process before talking with me.
We can first discuss your business, what you need and whether this programme appears to be the right fit. If RBN support may be appropriate, I can then explain the proposal and approval process and what happens next.
